Sony Headphones Review - The Best Noise Cancelling Headphones

The fifth-generation Sony noise cancelling headphones are a little different from the previous model but sound just as great. They're comfortable, lightweight and boast a range of features including Speak-to -Chat mode, Quick Attention mode, wear detection and AI-powered DSEE Extreme audio upscaling.

The ANC is very powerful and reduces train noise to a low rumble. A 'pass through' option allows you to hear outside sounds if needed.

1. Sony WH-1000XM5

Sony's headphones are consistently among the top in the market when it comes to noise cancelling. The fifth generation of WH1000XM5s are the same. They offer one of the most enjoyable audio experiences that we've had. Strapping a pair on and enabling noise cancellation is like walking into a vast cone of silence: The sound of engines and the whirring of HVAC systems, the creaking metal, even neighboring conversations are all muted to an incredible degree.

The XM5s also impress on the audio front. Their expansive soundstage allows the entire song to breathe and shine. For instance, on Billie's Bad Guy, the drums beat with a satisfying amount of force and heft as high-pitched vocals blend into the mix.

Other features that make the XM5s stand out are their intelligent interactions with your smart device. They can sense when they are removed from the head and pause the music. They also can detect that you are driving on a noisy highway and automatically lower the noise cancelling level.

The WH-1000XM5s also are green. The WH-1000XM5s are made from recycled plastics and butadiene, acrylonitrile and styrene. Their headband is made of high-quality fabric. They also include a collapsible carrying case that folds to form a compact bag, as well as a 3.5mm-to-3.5mm accessory cable to listen in a quiet mode. The ear cups are removable to make it easy to clean. The XM5s run on rechargeable batteries that provide up to 20 hours of playtime on full charge. Additionally, they're equipped with an adaptive fast charging system that charges at twice the speed of standard USB headphones.

2. Bose QuietComfort 35

The Bose QuietComfort 35 I/QC35 II Wireless with their comfortable fit with a balanced sound profile and ANC technology that blocks out a significant amount of background noise They are more adaptable than the Audio-Technica ATHDR9BT Wireless Headphones. The Bose headphones also come with longer battery life, lasting for 20 hours, take less time to charge and can be used connected to a smartphone even when the battery is dead, making them a better option for those looking for a pair of headphones that can function as commuting headphones or travel headphones.

These premium Bose headphones feature a dedicated Google Assistant button, which allows the assistant to play music, respond to questions, and read notifications from your smartphone. These headphones are incredibly quiet with excellent noise cancelling capabilities. They're a bit old-fashioned by 2020 standards, but you can still find excellent bargains.

The QC35s, along with other Bose ANC headsets, do a good job at blocking ambient noise. Their noise reduction technology has also improved over time. They're not the most effective ANC headphone available, especially when compared to more recent competitors. Audiophiles should consider other options for better audio quality.

The QC35s also have the ability to connect to two devices at the same time and also "audio share" with a friend. This is great for those who want to listen to music while conversing with another person. These headphones are also popular with frequent flyers and feature the classic Bose design that many people love. SlickWraps or Skin Sticker decal covers are available for purchase at a reasonable price if you want to personalize your QC35s.

3. Sony WH-1000XM4

Sony's WH-1000XM4s don't offer much in the way of aesthetic or comfort changes from the M3s, however its noise cancelling technology is a whole new beast. Sony has replaced the old system-on chip (SoC) with a new one that it claims will allow it to detect and react more accurately to the ambient sound in real time while reducing mid- and high-frequency noises using its Dual Noise sensor technology.

Two feedforward microphones in each earcup absorb ambient sounds, which are then processed by the QN1 noise-cancelling process to reduce it as fast as possible without altering the quality of your music. The result is an amount of noise reduction that is comparable to the best headphones available at this price.

There's even a sensitivity control that lets you adjust the noise cancellation to your requirements. If you're out in public for instance you may want a little bit of ambient noise to be blocked out, while at home you'll prefer a more closed-off listening experience. This feature uses geo-location to determine the correct setting based on your destination.

The WH1000XM4s can be used for making calls using hands-free technology. They also have a 30 hour battery life and fast charging capabilities. They also boast a robust Bluetooth 5.0 connection that supports for multipoint and NFC. In my tests I discovered that an instant restoration of Paul McCartney's Flaming pie was dynamic and clear as well as rough mixes and recordings from home also sounded clear and crisp.

To get the most out of these headphones, you'll need download the companion Sony Headphones Connect app. You can alter the EQ and take advantage of convenience features like Bluetooth multipoint. Additionally, it unlocks cool new features, like Sony's 360 Reality Audio immersive sound mastering process.

They don't have a carrying case, auto-pause feature, or earcups that fold up which makes them difficult to carry around.

The WH-CH720N's build quality is decent but not as impressive as the aforementioned 1000XM5. The headband and earcups are made of plastic.  over ear headphones with noise cancelling  are light and comfortable for long periods of time however, they aren't built to withstand heavy use or a few drops on hard surfaces. The design is bulky, and the earcups rattle when you move them. The controls are easy to use with tactile buttons which provide a good clicky feedback. A single touch of the power button toggles ANC on and off, while pressing and holding prompts you to turn on Sony's Adaptive Audio Control functionality. This feature allows you to select an audio profile that is preset according to the type of headphones you're using the headphones (e.g., "Staying at Work" or "Running") or your current location (with your phone granted permission to make this determination).

The WH-CH720N wireless noise cancelling headphones are one of the most affordable on the market. For the price, you get great ANC and excellent sound quality and comfort, as well as up to 35 hours of battery life. These headphones are worth checking when you travel frequently.

5. Earfun Air Pro

Earfun's headsets and earbuds are known for offering great value, and the Air Pro is no exception. They're great for music and calls and their ANC technology blocks out a significant amount of noise without making your ears feel suffocated. These headphones also have many features that are available in headphones that cost nearly twice as more.

The earbuds have a pronounced bass range which adds rumble and punch to most tracks while keeping the the lead vocals and instruments clear and alive. This makes them perfect for a variety of content. However, they could sound a bit boomy to some. They have a consistent frequency response, so they sound the same regardless of the content you are listening.

We listened to Missy Elliott's Get Ur Freak On, and the earbuds did an amazing job of showcasing the track's bass-heavy opening with enthusiasm and zeal. Stormzy's Vossi Bop was a similarly fluid listen with the treble playing off the many layers of vocals and the percussion.

Voice quality is top-notch even in noisy surroundings. The earbuds are equipped with the latest Qualcomm chip which ensures background noises, clicks, and other distractions are kept at low levels. This is the case even when you are talking to London Underground during rush hour.

The Bluetooth connectivity of the earbuds is also excellent, with very few issues we encountered during our testing. They connect quickly and with low latency to iOS and Android devices. They are also IPX5 water resistant, so they're perfect for rain and exercise - though you shouldn't submerge them in water. They also come with a movable case that can hold two and a half charges that are great for travelling.
